Ruby & Beige

The jaal, a continuous trellis of interlacing lines and flowers, is one of the oldest ideas in South Asian design. It was carved into marble screens, woven into carpets and printed onto cloth, a pattern meant to feel endless. Atelier 04 brings the jaal back to the printing table, set by Samina Butt in two of the most beloved colours in Pakistani textiles: festive ruby and soft beige.

The beige shirt carries a fine ruby trellis of small floral medallions, edged with ruby bands at the cuffs. Against it, the ruby dupatta reverses the palette: a beige jaal falls across its length, framed by a richly patterned border and a grand pallu of gold paisleys touched with sage, the timeless motif of abundance and life. One piece is quiet and the other ceremonial, and together they are entirely complete.

The Naqsh Collection

Naqsh is Kalamkaari's signature block print collection: heritage motifs carved into wooden blocks and printed by hand, in a style that has defined Samina Butt's work for more than twenty-five years. Each design is a study in restraint, where pattern, border and colour are placed with the care of a fine art composition.

The Shirt

A beige raw silk ground hand block printed with a fine ruby trellis, each lattice holding a small floral medallion. Ruby bands at the cuffs give the sleeves a quiet, finished frame.

The Dupatta

Ruby raw silk printed with a beige jaal along its length, bordered with an intricate repeating band and finished with a grand pallu of gold paisleys touched with sage. It is the ceremonial heart of the ensemble and drapes with real presence.

The Trouser

A plain beige raw silk trouser completes the set, a calm foundation that lets the printed shirt and dupatta lead.

Styling

Ruby and beige call for gold. Antique gold jhumkas, a string of pearls and embellished gold khussas complete the look. Let the dupatta fall from one shoulder so its paisley pallu is seen, or drape it across both shoulders for a more ceremonial occasion.

Craftsmanship & Print Variation

Every Kalamkaari piece is printed by hand, block by block. Slight variations in placement, depth of colour and texture are the signature of the artisan's hand, and make each piece entirely its own.

Colour Note

Colours may appear slightly different on screen due to photography, lighting and display settings.

Caring for Your Raw Silk

Hand block printed raw silk is a living textile. Treated gently, it will keep its texture and the clarity of every impression for years to come.

  • Dry clean only is recommended, to protect both the raw silk and the hand-printed colours.
  • If hand washing is unavoidable, use cold water and a mild, pH-neutral silk detergent. Wash separately and do not soak.
  • Never wring or twist. Press out water gently, roll in a clean towel and dry flat in the shade.
  • Keep away from direct sunlight, which can fade natural block print colours.
  • Iron on the reverse at a low silk setting, with a pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric.
  • Apply perfume and deodorant before dressing, never directly onto the fabric.
  • Store folded in a muslin or cotton cloth, never in plastic, in a cool, dry place. Refold occasionally along new lines so creases do not set.
